The 'Levels' hitmaker - who split with the former Miss Universe in 2015 after two years of dating - has revealed he decided on the album name because it would be the "easiest way" to avoid getting asked about their "complicated" romance.

Explaining the title, he said: "I feel like the title was the easiest way to try and dodge the question about what the album is about.

"I had a complicated year and tried to pour it into the music.

"There was a break-up I went through last summer [with Olivia Culpo] that would become what the record was about."

The 23-year-old pop star's album - the follow-up to his self-titled debut album - was also influenced by becoming a solo artist after being so used to being in a band with his brother's Kevin and Joe Jonas in the Jonas Brothers.

In an interview with Britain's i newspaper, he explained: "On top of that I think learning how to be a solo artist and travelling everywhere alone, doing interviews alone, all of that ... You just have to get used to it."

The hunky singer also admits he is struggling with being a solo star because he gets "lonely" when he's away from his family for too long on the road.

He explained: "I get lonely. I was so used to travelling with my family and being around my brothers all the time... That was the standard. And it was about getting adjusted when that ended."

'Last Year Was Complicated' is released on June 10.
