The 'Like I Can' hitmaker was handed the gong for Best Original Song for his and Jimmy Napes' track, 'Writing's On The Wall', the theme tune for the latest Bond movie 'SPECTRE', at last night's (28.02.16) ceremony.

In his acceptance speech, he said: "I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar.

"If is this case, even if it isn't the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand as equals one day."

Whilst he was later corrected for his faux pas, when journalists told him Ian was referring solely to the Best Actor gong and that there had been previous openly gay Oscar winners, he admitted he had been "overwhelmed" by the whole experience.

He said: "I wanted to take this opportunity to show how much I care about my community. In the past, in my career, people have said at the beginning that I didn't.

"I just wanted to make [it] clear how much I truly do care about the LGBT community. At the same time I'm just, we're just, completely overwhelmed ... I'm a little bit drunk as well."
