Sam Smith worried that his career would be damaged if he was open about his sexuality.

The singer knew it was a "risk" to say he was gay from a "very young age", but is happy that fans have proved him wrong, with him going on to enjoy success globally.

He explained: "I've been very open from a very young age about it. The thought of people not being able to hear the music I make scared me, because that's my dream.

"That's been my dream from a very young age. So it was a risk but I was proved completely wrong."

Having recently appearing to suggest he doesn't like the idea of being a spokesperson for the gay community, he insists that what he meant to get across is that he doesn't want to represent just one group of people.

Speaking to the Daily Star he commented: "What I meant was I don't want to limit to just one community. I want to reach everyone, gay people, lesbians, transsexuals, straight people, Catholics, anyone."

Celebrity fans continue to grow for Sam, whose talent has reached the ears of Katy Perry, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga to name just three, but he is more impressed with talent than the fame.

"You recognise them more for their talent than fame. I met Beyoncé. She told me my voice was like butter."
