Tom Odell's music teacher is 'not surprised' the star's album 'Long Way Down' went to number one.

The 'Hold Me' singer excelled at songwriting and live performance during his time at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) according to songwriting tutor Ian Sillett.

Ian expressed how proud he was of his former-student: "I'm not surprised, I'm really pleased. He deserves it. I think he's been an inspiration for a lot of students."

The award-winning tutor said he could not predict the 22-year-old's success, but knew he had enough talent from the beginning.

He added: "Some people do it, some people get close to it, some people just write great songs and aren't as famous as the others. It's kind of like a lottery. But he had all the qualities you need to go on that big platform and for a lot of people to really like him which is what has happened."

Although the majority of Tom's abilities were of high-quality, Ian says the 'Another Love' singer was never amazing at music theory.

He said: "I don't think he was terrible at that, I don't think he was Einstein at it either but most songwriters aren't particularly well known for music theory really. I might be wrong but that's my opinion."
