Dull Spark is the second single to be taken from the critically acclaimed third album from Edinburgh’s Meursault - Something For The Weakened - and will be released on September 24th through independent label Song, by Toad Records.
Showcasing the more upbeat side of the band’s repertoire, Dull Spark makes great use of the band’s expert musicianship, incorporating chime-like syncopated piano phrases, luscious string arrangements and pounding drum beats, and contrasting with the gruff yet uplifting vocals of Neil Pennycook and the distorted riffs of the electric guitar.
Dull Spark is accompanied on the latest release by new track, A Mother’s Arms. Differing from the optimistic feel of the lead track, A Mother’s Arms encapsulates the sombre and melancholy doggedness that Meursault have come to be known for.
The lavish strings and Pennycook’s poignant lyrics make for another heart wrenching, yet beautiful, number from Meursault.
Recorded at Pumpkinfield Studios near Perth with cellist Pete Harvey at the helm for engineering duties, Meursault found themselves in a very different environment from the recording process of their previous releases in borrowed bedrooms and living rooms.
Seasoned live performers, the band have played many summer festivals, including Glastonbury, End of the Road and Wickerman, as well as touring Europe with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Dull Spark comes out on September 24th following on from the success of album, Something For The Weakened released in July, both through Song, By Toad Records.
