Dear River is Emily Barker’s fourth album and is the third album she has produced alongside her band The Red Clay Halo. I thought that Dear River was an excellent track and her entire album has only made me fall in love with her voice even more.

The opening song is Dear River, which is a beautiful track that really shows off the gorgeous tones of Barker’s voice. The beauty of Emily’s lyrics in the song stems from her personal experiences and you can really feel the honesty behind her words.

Tuesday is a quirky and upbeat track that has a brilliant guitar based melody which really shows the Country and Folk roots of this artist. I really love the violin in the song; I believe this heightens the song creating an uplifting feel to the listener.

Letter is a softer ballad but still manages to be enriching, smooth and poignant. The Leaving is the fourth track on the album, another slowed down track that has some stunning harmonies.

Everywhen then picks up the pace again, with a dazzling guitar riff and powerhouse vocals. Sleeping Horses then soothes and calms, with its graceful melody and fingerpicking guitar chords this is one of my favourites on the album.

Ghost Narrative has a jazz-type of melody with accordion stylised music and quirky lyrics. A Spadeful of Ground has a child-like feel to it; the introduction is cheerful and jubilant and stood out for me as the most individual track.

The Cormorant and the Heron is definitely the most beautiful track on the album, with an elegant melody and emotive lyrics this is my ultimate favourite.

In the Winter I Returned is another ballad fuelled by mellow guitars and breathy vocals. The Blackwood is the last track on the album, it begins with an a Capella introduction and then a sweet melody supports her vocal through to the end of the song. This is my lyrical favourite on the album; the imagery that she paints with her words is both inspiring and uplifting.

Dear River is breathtakingly beautiful; every song is poised and poignant making this a perfect album to calm and to soothe the ears.
