If you are a lover of the folk gene then you really are spoilt for choice at the moment as there are so many great artists putting out quality records.

Jonas Bonnetta is one of those artists as he returns with his sophomore album Spectral Dusk under the new name of Evening Hymns.

This is an album that is an ode to his father, who passed away, and looks at the sadness and pain of loss as well as celebrating life.

The record kicks off with one of those irritating and pointless intros but once that is out of the way Arrows kicks off this fine and moving record.

The track has this constant pounding percussion - that acts almost like a heartbeat - but it really does push the track.

Arrow has a very spiritual feel to it while Bonnetta’s voice is just filled with emotion and pain - it really is a very emotional and powerful opening track.

There is a complete mood change in Family Tree as Bonnetta sings about the breaking down of a family and the severing of family ties.

Family Tree is a stripped back track that really allows Bonnetta’s deep and rich vocal shine through and gives you a chance to listen to the powerful message that he delivers with his lyrics.

You and Jake is another great track and perhaps one of the most personal as it is a song about memories.

It is predominately an acoustic track but the electronic guitar twangs that we hear on and off through out really are a great touch.

This is not a ‘oh my dad is dead’ record it is a record that just deals with the inevitably of this subject driven forward by personal experience.

From start to finish this is beautiful and poignant record that lays this subject bare and there is something here that we can all relate to.

Bonnetta does lay his soul bare with this album and yet this is a record that is more of a set of memories than an album that wallows in self pity.

Spectral Dusk is one of the most beautiful albums that you will hear all you as these songs will strike a chord with everyone who hears them.
