Album Cover 'Acid Rain: Definitive Original Acid And Deep House 1985-1991

A mixed bag of heavy grooves, reverb vocals and electronic beats, the CD collection offers a selection of deep house classics. DJ and producer Terry Farely has compiled music that he believes influenced some of the best music out there today.

Farely concentrated on the sound’s Chicago roots, with classics by the likes of Phuture, Bam Bam and DJ Pierre. Acid house: Definitive Original Acid & Deep House 1985-1991 is an album with nostalgia at its very core.

The collection is divided into sections; each CD has a titled and a theme. The first CD is The Birth of Deep house, which is pretty self-explanatory.

Tracks such as William S’s I’ll Never Let You Go and M.E’s ghostlike string fuelled track School Hall establish a basic template of bass, keys and string melodies. Let Your Body Talk by Ace and the Sandman adds muted disco chants for variety.

The second CD is titled In the Dark We Live, which has a track by Virgo titled R U Hot Enough, it is powered by keys and percussion. Whereas, Mr Finger’s Washing Machine has a techno vibe with funky beats and a trance like aura.

I have only received sampler’s from the first two CD’s to review but I’m sure the other three CD’s had similar tracks and themes to the first two.

The collection is almost an arc of time, we start at the roots of deep house music and where it all began. No music before or since has better captured the sweaty, blank-eyed intensity of being lost on a dance floor. Every beat that is present on this album had its own way of shaping the club music of today.

It's one of the reasons why the music on Acid Rain doesn't really feel dated, despite being packed with sounds that were the cutting edge 25 or 30 years ago: stuttering reverb drenched vocals, harsh sampled orchestral stabs and drum machines this CD could have possibly been originally released yesterday.

Farely manages to pull together the heart of house music with this definitive collection.
