Shoppers will need to dig deep this year, as the average Briton is expecting to receive £631 worth of Christmas gifts, according to new research.

A survey of 1,025 British adults carried out by One4all, the Post Office gift card, found men expect their partners to spend almost £140 on their presents - £15 more than women anticipate receiving from their partners.

The data also found more than a third of respondents have received socks for Christmas from a loved one, while more than 1 in 10 have unwrapped a cleaning related item on Christmas morning, such as a steam-mop or a hoover.

An unlucky 1 in 4 Brits is left feeling disappointed on Christmas morning, receiving at least one present every year that they don't like.

To avoid this, Brits should opt for the top five types of gifts Brits want most this Christmas - money took the top spot, followed by tech gadgets, gift cards and jewellery.

Boyfriends (27%), girlfriends (25%) and mums (19%) all confessed they would most like to receive money for Christmas this year. Traditional gifts for mums still apply, however, as jewellery was the second type of gift UK mothers would most like to receive.

Dads would most like to unwrap the latest gadget this year, with more than 1 in 4 saying a smartphone, tablet, drone or hover board is top of their list for Santa.

Aoife Davey, group marketing manager at One4all Gift Cards, commented "People's expectations in terms of the value of the presents they will get at Christmas present is staggeringly high. We do seem to place a lot of emphasis on the value of the presents we get. This is particularly clear to see when you consider that money is the number one most desired type of gift this year."

"But at the end of the day, money is quite lacking in imagination, and is often likely to be used towards household bills or similar and be forgotten come the New Year, whereas a gift card packaged in an attractive Christmas design or with a personal message shows a lot more thought and will be guaranteed to be appreciated."

"I think it's realistic for us to expect gifts from friends and family members, but also for us to remember that the old saying 'it's the thought that counts' should still apply."

Greedy Belfast residents expect more than £196 worth of presents from each family member, while modest Oxford locals expect just £25 from everyone.

The One4all Gift Card is available to buy from Post Offices nationwide and online at www.one4allgiftcard.co.uk, and can be spent in more than 22,000 stores across the UK.
