With the summer holidays in full swing and public libraries across the country promoting their summer reading challenge, lots of children (and their parents) are making decisions about which book to read next, and enjoying the freedom to choose a book that interest and inspires.

Freedom from term-time routine also offers opportunities for children to read at their leisure or for the little ones, enjoy a cuddle and being read to instead of simply at bed-time.

But which stories to choose, which to recommend? The shelves of libraries and bookshops are overladen with choice. As a parent, do you recommend you childhood favourites or hear on the playground grapevine about a fabulous new illustrator? Sometimes the options are as overwhelming as exciting.

Two bookmarks have been created by ‘That Company Called IF’ that might make this decision a little. They contain 50 pictorial listings, in no particular order, of recommended book titles suitable for up to 5 and up to 12 year olds.

A quick glance at the bookmark for younger children reveals classics such as Peter Rabbit, Thomas the Tank Engine and Winnie-the-Pooh, but also books from modern authors such as Julia Donaldson and Lauren Child.

The bookmark for the older children similarly has titles from Roald Dahl and C.S.Lewis but also David Walliams and Michael Morpurgo. So both children and parents should recognise a fair few favourites instantly.

Product Developer from IF Sarah Tyson explained: “What constitutes “Best” is a hugely subjective topic, but our research of published reading lists revealed that there were consistently popular titles. We painstakingly cross-referred the lists to establish our Top 50 books. We hope that people will enjoy finding on the list some books that they have already enjoyed and the remainder will serve as inspiration for their next read”.
