Today is International Legging Day and it seemed wrong to let this day pass us by without celebrating how much leggings do for the new mum community. Here’s why they are the best thing to happen to new mums since the perfect prep machine.

They are comfortable: You literally don’t know you are wearing them when you pull them on. They are like a giant hug for each of your legs. New motherhood can present a lot of physical discomfort and your clothes don’t need to add to that problem.

They are gentle around the areas that matter most: When you are recovering from a c-section, a tear or scar, these are gentle around the most delicate of skin. Plus they are kind around your belly area which may be feeling tender too.

They have become the new mum uniform: You can spot a new mum a mile off because they will probably be wearing leggings and a baggy top. Why? Because they are quick and easy to throw on so you can concentrate all your efforts on your baby.

They can be dressed up or down: If you are tired but want to leave the house, leggings and a top are presentable enough to face the outside world. Similarly if you have visitors who come to see your new baby, leggings and a loose top are just as comfortable as PJs but show you are expecting company.

On the other hand, if you have somewhere to be and want to make a bit more of an effort, leggings can be paired with a dress or a more dressy top, heels and a handbag.

They don’t discriminate: You can wear leggings if you are a tall, petite or plus sized mama. There is a pair of leggings out there for you now matter what shape or size you are- shop around and you will find a pair to suit your body shape.

They come in a range of colours: Whether you dig black, pink, white or blue, there is a colour of legging that will go with your existing clothes, even nursing ones. Whether you like your attire to be bright and busy or prefer to keep things monochrome and simple, there is a pair to suit all tastes.

They wash like a dream: When you peel them off your legs at night, chances are they will be covered in milk, dribble, vomit and other bodily fluids, but that’s ok because you can throw them in the wash ready for their next wear and they don’t need ironing, because what new mum has time for that?!

Thank you leggings for all you do for us, from one grateful mammy!
