Unfortunately, for two thirds of parents it is also used to catch up on work as they say they have a hard time switching off.

Although over 80 per cent of parents said they would love to spend the entire holiday focusing on their children, it just isn’t possible.

Seven in ten parents said they had to work as it was necessary for their business to run smoothly in their absence whereas 14 per cent said they were under pressure from their employer.

Shockingly, 6 per cent of parents believed that they would be in with a chance of losing their job if they didn’t work on holiday.

Four in ten parents just couldn’t shake being out of work and admitted that they would work on holiday out of habit.

The same amount of parents will work 4 to 5 hours a week when on holiday and 68 per cent of partners say that their spouse will take work calls on holiday.

A massive 78 per cent will check their emails and 62 per cent of those will check them every day without fail!

Wendy Shand, founder of Tots To Travel who conducted the research, and a mum-of-three herself, said, “Despite being a business owner myself, I was surprised to discover that 69 per cent of parents work during their summer holiday.

“Even more shocking is the fact that 40 per cent of the respondents do so out of habit.

“As a parent of young children I believe we all need to give ourselves a break, turn our back on technology, and ensure that, even if only for one week, we do our best to forget about work and spend time with our families.”
