If your child has spent most of the summer holidays avoiding the brilliant outdoors and are content with sitting inside playing on their gadgets and gizmos, but you’re fed up with the kids making a mess of the house and are concerned of the lack of fresh air that they are getting, then a new hobby may be a step in the right direction to getting them active this summer.

Change4Life and Disney have teamed up with dance troupe ‘Nu Sxool’ as part of the 10 Minute Shake Up campaign to help kids get active this summer.

As statistics reveal just 1 in 5 children aged 5-10 meets the recommended target of 60 minutes of daily activity, with almost 40% of children in this age group doing less than 30 minutes per day, it’s time to make a change in your child’s lifestyle.

Children need a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each day, which can be achieved in one session or through shorter bursts of 10 minute activity. 10 minutes performed several times a day is sufficient to improve fitness and health overall.

In school-aged children, physical activity can lead to better academic achievement, increased attention span, improved behaviour and self-confidence as well as increased physical health and a reduced risk of developing chronic conditions in the future.

The campaign comes as Disney’s ‘Sound of Summer’ competition invites children to get moving by having a go at learning a brand new dance, specially created for the 10 Minute Shake Up campaign by TV dance judge and choreographer Lizzie Gough.

American pop rock band R5’s single ‘Loud’ (which was donated by the band to Change4Life earlier in the summer), is the chosen song that the kids can dance and will get kids up, about and having fun.

To sign up to the 10 Minute Shake Up, simply search Change4Life online and register for your free pack, support emails and exclusive access to the Shake Up Zone, which is full of ideas for games and activities to keep kids moving this summer. Packs include a stopwatch for timing 10 minutes of activity, a wall chart and stickers for monitoring activity and Disney character activity cards.

To enter the dancing competition upload your child’s dance to the Change4Life Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/change4life, to enter the Sound of Summer competition.

The winning entry will get a half day dance lesson with Lizzie Gough in a London studio for five friends, with an overnight stay in a London hotel and transport there and back, plus expenses. 10 runners up will also win R5 fitness-related merchandise.
