You’ve barely finished telling your friend about the new guy you’ve been texting for the past week, when she announces she “just has to” meet him and the next thing you know you’ve agreed to a double date. This can conjure up images of an awkward dinner table and stumbling over questions about your future together, but it doesn’t need to be this way- the team at My Friend Charlie share some of their ideas for group dates that are exciting but aren’t cringeworthy.

Sunset cycling

If you’re worried about the conversation flowing at your date, you might find that a cycling tour of London is the ideal date for you. Stopping at venues across the city will mean you always have something to talk about, whilst drinks along the way will keep you relaxed.

Go to a listening party

Listening parties are on the rise, and London in particular, is a hub for new and upcoming artists. The idea behind them is for musicians to give their fans a first listen of new music and can be a great way to get to know your date, especially if you have similar music tastes. Similarly, a concert is a great way to break the ice and feel relaxed around each other.

Picnics in the park & garden games

There’s no better way to enjoy the British Summer than with a picnic! Your favourite snacks, light chat and drinks over entertaining games will create a relaxed atmosphere and put you at ease. All you need is a blanket and if you feel nervous about suggesting this unique date, go as a group!

Go karting

If you are after something that offers an adrenaline rush, look no further than go karting to get your engines started! Again, breaking into teams can help get rid of any initial awkwardness and determine the group dynamic- will your date try and take the lead or do they hang back and wait for the others to make the decisions? This will give you a good idea as to whether they compliment your personality or not!

Mini golf

It’s an oldie but a goodie. Mini golf has been a first date staple for years, but in many cities you can now find courses combined with cocktails and food, making it an exciting idea for an evening date. The team at My Friend Charlie suggest teaming up with your date so you can work together.

Go to a theme park

There’s nothing like being flung around on a ride, screaming at the top of your lungs and trying to keep your lunch down- all whilst trying to remain composed next to someone you fancy. Despite this situation being highly likely, it can be a great way to break the ice- and queuing for rides can be a good chance to get to know each other!

Make pizzas

From experience, this can be harder than it looks. It takes patience and dedication- all good qualities to test your date on! It's a good opportunity to find out more about your date; what food they like, where they go out to eat and where you can go for your next dinner date!

Go to the zoo

A trip to the zoo is a staple when it comes to dates, a tried and tested day out that never goes out of fashion. It’s a great way to get your date talking about activities they liked to when they were growing up and get to know them better. Make sure to time it right so you can feed the animals!

Go to the beach

It doesn’t have to be summer to go to the beach- the weather certainly helps if you want to lie in the sun or go swimming in the sea, but it doesn’t have to be 25 degrees to have a good time at the seaside. Take your spare 2p coins and head to the arcade for an afternoon at the pier. Bonus points if you make use of the dance mat or photobooth to take cute photos you can look back on!

Have a campfire

Getting a group together for a barbeque or to sit around a fire pit can be a great, chilled out way to spend the evening and get to know someone better. When the evening gets chillier, toast some marshmallows over the fire and make s’mores.
