The activity effect

Whenever you watch a dating style show like Millionaire Matchmaker or Take Me Out, the one thing they have in common is that they always get the daters doing something fun, anything from paragliding to wine tasting or having a massage. We might think that’s just because it makes better television (which it does) but there’s a deeper reason too. Anyone (or should that be most people!) can act ‘normal’ for an hour or two over a dinner table but set an activity and the real person comes out. Combine dating with exercise and you’ll get to see first-hand what someone is really like.

Shared interests

Full disclosure here, as a man with a beard I’m all about the facial hair, and if dating sites like Bristlr are anything to go by I’m not the only one! But as much as I love my beard even I’ve got to admit that as a shared interest it’s not the strongest! One of the biggest reasons that people quit exercising once they couple-up is because their other half isn’t interested in fitness. So if fitness is your thing, it makes sense to find someone who shares your fitness fanaticism from the outset.

Weeds out the fakers

There’s no getting around the fact that dating is hard! Yes, we’ve got Tinder, Zoosk hundreds of other apps promising to help us find love but it seems that they’re not quite giving us the results we want. 71% of dating app users said they were fed up of misleading profiles and 21% said that deceptive profile pictures were a problem. This all makes the case for meeting someone in person, before you’ve invested too much time.

The ultimate leveller

As you strut through the bar with an eye out for potential love matches, the reality is that you make up your mind about a person in mere seconds. Hair- good, clothes- nice! Shoes- noooo! The problem is though that you could be missing out on finding out more about someone who could be perfect for you based on really insignificant factors like clothes. Fitness is the ultimate leveller because there are no fancy clothes, no bad shoes, so it makes absolute sense to throw it in with dating.

Couple goals

Combine dating with exercise and it’s like you’re completing the Relationship 101 Handbook! So when you’re encouraging each other to do that last sit-up, you’re setting the foundations for a relationship based on positivity. When you’re setting fitness goals, you’re getting into the habit of healthy communication and goal setting. And when you’re training together, you’re developing intimacy and strength as a couple. There are many reasons that dating and fitness go so well together, but developing relationships that are built to last has to the best one!
