Luckily, only 18 per cent of men have admitted that this is something they have actually done on a first date.

The research was conducted by NetVoucherCodes.co.uk and surveyed 800 about their use of discount codes.

They found that a tight 9 per cent of men would only take their date to a restaurant that they had discount codes for.

Both age and location played a big factor in whether men were prepared to use discount codes on a first date.

According to the data, those who fell in the 18 to 30 age categories were twice as likely to use a voucher code when wooing a potential Juliet, than those aged 45 and above.

The tightest Lotharios lived in London, Manchester and Liverpool where almost one in three admitted to using a voucher code when out with a woman for the first time.

Plymouth and Bristol came out as the cities with the best potential boyfriends as only two per cent confessed to having used a voucher code on a first date.

A spokeswoman from NetVoucherCodes.co.uk said, “Although society expects guys to pay the full whack on a first date, we have to remember that even budding Romeos have been hit by the tough economic times.

“I don’t know why there is such a stigma around guys being expected to pay full price for a meal. If I were given the chance to get a few pounds knocked off the bill, I’d take it.

“Everyone is tightening their belts at the moment. If I was on a first date and a guy used a voucher code, I’d be impressed with his thriftiness. After all he could have asked me to split the bill!”

One man who took part in the survey said, “I don’t think it is at all unromantic to use a discount code on a first date.

“In fact I think women like to see that a man is responsible with money; on top of that if the date goes badly you’re not completely out of pocket.”

Another respondent said, “I would never use a voucher code on a first date. You are there to make a good impression, and getting your coupon book out at the end of the meal sends out completely the wrong message. In my view it is almost as bad as asking the lady to pay for the meal.”
