The 30-year-old heir to the throne beat off competition from Bond star Daniel Craig, and crooner Michael Buble, to be named the perfect gent, as voted by British women.

The chivalrous Prince was streets ahead of his father, Charles, and younger brother Harry - who gained less than one per cent of the vote - in the race to win the coveted award.

RAF pilot William was praised for his exquisite manners, his well-groomed wardrobe and fine physical appearance, plus the protective nature of the bond with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.

The research of 1,000 women across the UK was commissioned by Johnson Cleaners in a bid to find who and what makes a gentleman in today’s modern society.

And it is clear that being a gentleman is just as important as ever to women, with almost nine out of ten (86.6%) insisting it is still crucial for a man to behave like a gent.

However the poll also identified those celebrities who behaved least like gentlemen. Named and shamed in pole position was comedian Russell Brand, followed by Chelsea footballers John Terry and Ashley Cole.

Speaking about the results of the survey, Paul Ogle, MD of Johnson Cleaners, said: “Prince William was the clear favourite, the man who more than any other epitomises what it means to be a modern day gentleman.

“He has impeccable breeding and immaculate dress sense, with perfectly turned out clothes no matter what the occasion. As the old saying goes – the clothes maketh the man.

“Women clearly agree, and alongside his fine physical appearance they also feel he has the grace, combined with the masculinity that goes with his job, to be crowned the perfect gent.”

The study also asked women for their favourite fictional gentlemen, with the dashing Mr Darcy from the classic Pride and Prejudice voted number one, followed by James Bond and Prince Charming from Cinderella – proving women love a prince in reality and fantasy.

While thanks to the popularity of international best seller Fifty Shades of Grey, one in ten women over 35 said their perfect fictional gent was the infamous Christian Grey, who is not normally known for his gentlemanly conduct.

And a quarter told researchers they wished their partner or husband was more like their favourite celebrity gentleman.

Paul Ogle, MD of Johnson Cleaners, added: “It is clear that many women love an old fashioned gentleman, either in fiction or reality. The qualities that make a gentleman are timeless and classic, just like the celebrities that came top of our research.”
