Your partner uses a nightlight- They can't sleep without some light coming from somewhere, which is especially hard if you like total darkness. You've perfected sleeping with your back to your partner to reduce the light in your face and you're pretty familiar with the spare room and the couch.

You thought they were joking about being afraid of the dark-Which caused a bit of awkwardness when you first got together. You did regret making insensitive comments but you've paid for it through lack of sleep so you don't feel as bad now.

They s leep with the landing light on- Your electricity bills do suffer as a consequence but your lover would be in a constant state of insomnia without it.

You prefer it when you get to stay in a hotel- At least the energy you use won't be added your bill. Although you have to book somewhere modern- they can't cope in older hotels. Why? Because all old hotels have ghosts.

They often get up and read a book- If their imagination is working over time they often find reading a book helps to distract their thoughts. Many times, you have woken to them with their nose in a book in the early hours.

They go to a friend or family member's house when you're not there- If you work away a lot- as soon as you tell them you're going away- they immediately call on someone to stay with because they can't bear to be alone, even if the night light and the landing lights are on.

They search the house for intruders every night- Because that's where they would hide- every horror movie taches you this. Sometimes they ask you to join in.

They are particularly bad after a scary movie- Every light goes on after a horror film. Your house looks like Blackpool illuminations and they have to conduct their checks more than once just to be sure.

They are particularly bad at this time of year- When the clocks go back, they don't like coming and going in the dark. They are a in a permanent state of unease until the nights get light again.

If they have a nightmare- They make just enough noise and movement to wake you up so they don't feel so alone.
