From when to do it to how to get it right, here are some pointers on how to avoid a bad break-up.

Why Are You Breaking Up?

Before you go and break the news it’s important to consider why you’re ending the relationship.

Your soon-to-be ex is probably going to ask why you’re ending things and so you’ll want to be able to give them an answer.

Going over your reason with yourself will also clarify whether a break-up is actually what you want.

Timing is Everything

You don’t want to leave your partner hanging but there are certain times when you should avoid the break-up conversation.

If they’ve had a super stressful day then it’s best to avoid hitting them with a break-up. They’re more likely to react badly and will resent you even more.

Equally, if you’re both having a really lovely day you don’t want to be hitting them with the bad news.

The Conversation

For the actual conversation it’s important to remain calm and to remember why you’re breaking up but at the same time make it as painless as possible.

Sit them down and talk them through your reasons for wanting to break-up. You never know, they may be willing to work through any problems you have to fix things.

If the situation becomes heated then don’t let it progress, simply walk away from the situation and let them know you’ll talk about it further when you’ve both calmed down.

The Aftermath

There’s no doubt that you’ll both be feeling distressed and upset but the worst thing to do is to be hostile towards each other.

If you both need space then allow each other to have it but it’s always better to end on good terms.

Ideally if you could work towards a friendship then put it into practise – remember, aside from the relationship you were both best friends at one point so it would be nice to take something from a bad situation.
