It’s incredible to think how we used to date before the internet opened up so many possibilities for us.

The old fashioned way involved either meeting someone whilst out and arranging a date with what essentially was a perfect stranger after a few sentences had been exchanged, or getting matched with someone via a friend.

It’s not like those situations don’t happen anymore, they do but the internet even helps us in those situations.

At least now you can actually check someone out before meeting them and have a look at their interests and what they like to do via Facebook and Twitter.

But does the internet actually enrich our dating experiences or hinder them?

Of course, the internet opens up to more possibilities. You can date people from all over the country by finding them on dating sites and being matched on compatibility.

But what about everything else? With internet dating you can practically find out everything about someone before you meet.

There is little element of surprise, you know what their interests are, what they look like, what they do for a job and much, much more.

A first date used to be a chance to get to know someone and really put the art of conversation to good use, but are we now losing that?

If you get on with someone before the date then great, you’ll most likely have a lovely time, but if you seem to get on great and then find you have nothing to talk about when you actually meet then you’ll find yourself at a loss.

Also, with online dating, you can build a persona that may not actually be true to form. If you’ve loved someone online and arrange to meet, you run the risk of them being completely different in person.

There's no doubt that internet dating has made our dating lives easier but it seems that it could also be hindering us too.
