A role of a partner is not comprised of just one thing- it has many different responsibilities and roles. We take a look at just 5 of the 'hats' you need to wear in order for you and your significant other to work in harmony with one another.

Which one are you wearing today?

Which one are you wearing today?

The Lover- This is the one person in the world with whom you are physically intimate. Part of being in an imitate partnership is having behaviours that are only reserved for you both as a couple.

How often you touch, kiss or have sex is up to you but it's essential that you engage in these affections to deepen your connection or you run the risk of being roommates/ just friends.

The Counsellor- Sometimes your partner will need to talk about things that go deeper than just how their day was or what you are having for dinner. If they need to express these feelings- let them- without any judgement. They may not need your opinion at this point. They may just need someone to be in the moment with them. To try and feel what they are going through so you can best understand their emotions to make them feel heard.

The Carer- When your partner is sick they may need a little extra support with the things they can normally do for themselves. This may require you to take on more of the jobs around the house and make sure they have everything they need from warmth, shade, to pain relief, a glass of water or a run to the hospital. Whatever it is- be sympathetic and they will do the same for you when you are ill.

The Friend- You should enjoy your partner's company as much as you do your friends. If you weren't a couple- you should be confident that you would still have maintained a friendship anyway because you are on the same wavelength. Be playful, loyal, spontaneous, a confidante, a good listener and fun- all the things you would want from a best mate.

The Conscience- Sometimes your partner might be on the cusp of doing something that you know they will regret. You have to be the voice of reason at that point and give them a new perspective on things. It's important that you are honest with your partner when the time comes so they can grasp the repercussions of their actions if they were to make a bad decision.

The Teacher- Each of you will bring different sets of knowledge to the relationship- accept it gracefully and educate with diplomacy. If you exchange knowledge, together you will be a strong team, so be open to learning new information and also sharing what you know.

The Negotiator- Every couple does things they don't want to for each other or in general because they feel it's expected of them or they know it will make their partner happy. It's important to balance all of this out and offer alternatives and solutions in order to make the day run more smoothly. Sometimes you will have to do the negotiating when your partner isn't in the right headspace. Chances are they will take the driver's seat when you are not in the right frame of mind in return.
