After decades of gay people protesting for equal marriage rights, MPs yesterday voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage.

It was a joyous day for Britain and one that will go down in history for many people.

David Cameron said that the decision is a "step forward for our country" and is very much in favour of same-sex marriage to become legal.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg also praised the vote by saying "No matter who you are and who you love, we are all equal. Marriage is about love and commitment, and it should no longer be denied to people just because they are gay."

Incredibly, 175 MPs voted against gay people having equal marriage rights, something that is truly shocking.

In this day and age, someone should not be punished for being gay.

Essentially, by refusing a gay person the right to marry the person they love simply because of their sexuality is punishing them.

Punishing them for something that they cannot help, something that is natural to them and part of who they are.

It seems absurd to think that people would actually refuse someone the right to get married because the person they wish to marry is the same sex as them.

We agree with David Cameron in saying that marriage brings community together.

It improves families, gives children that have gay parents stability and all in all makes for a better society to be a part of.

We here at FemaleFirst couldn't be more delighted by the news that swept the nation yesterday and we can't wait for the next developments to be put in place.
