A recent study found that more than 93% of couples that gambled something in the name of love have stayed together, and more than one in ten (13%) went on to get engaged or married, (if they weren’t already). A third (33%) said their act of love had made their relationship stronger.

Over half (55%) of respondents said they believed that occasionally moving out of their comfort zone is a good thing, and nine in ten revealed they are ready to take a gamble if it could ultimately make them happier.

Christian Dente, 30, a Teaching Assistant from Leeds is the perfect example of someone who gambled something in the name of love and it paid off. Clearly, moving out of his comfort zone was a good decision and as he reveals- he has never been happier.

Christian explains: “After finishing University, I had planned on a once- in-a-lifetime trip around the world with some close friends from my home town. With the first stop being Japan, we were then going on to Australia where we planned to live and work for the duration of our two-year visa.

“Having saved up to go away throughout my studies, I moved back home and took up a part-time job in a local pizza restaurant in the time between leaving University in May and going abroad in July, to make ends meet. It was in this time that I met a girl, who would become my future wife.

“With the flights booked, and accommodation sorted, I had committed to going to live in Australia, but had met the woman of my dreams, and had fallen deeply in love in a few short weeks.

“Leaving my girlfriend at the airport for an indefinite period of time was one of the hardest things I’d ever done. And it was also the first time that I told her how I truly felt.

“On one hand, I was incredibly lucky to be in Tokyo and experience a different culture with my best friends, but always felt that something was missing. After leaving Japan, then spending two months in Australia, I decided that it was time to cut my travels short, and come back to England.

“So I arrived back in England, penniless, and without a job. In the meantime, my girlfriend had moved to London for work, and I was stuck in Yorkshire living with my parents.

“Obviously, with more than a 300-mile drive between us it was hard to fit in time together. We spent every weekend with each other, and after a year of living apart, I got a job in digital marketing, and made the big move down to London, where we lived with each other for the first time.

“After five years of living in London we decided that it was time to make the move back to Yorkshire, where my girlfriend sacrificed the job that she loved so we could be closer to our family.

“After buying our first house together in 2015, I popped the big question and we got married and had the wedding of our dreams.

“I definitely gambled by moving back to the UK from paradise for love, but after eight years together, we’re happier than ever and now looking forward to starting a family.”
