Relationships on Female First

Dr Who and River Song

For those of us who find relationships tricky, it's inspiring to see that it's possible to forge a successful romance with someone you've been conditioned since birth to want to kill. But it's not only that their love story is against all odds that makes us big fans of this couple- it's the inherent timey-wimey ness of it all- he first meets her when she dies to save his life, she first meets him as she's trying to kill him, one of their love notes is the oldest recorded message in history ('hello sweetie), and then there's that time that she remembers him back into existence. And who wouldn't love a dinner date at the Singing Towers of Darillium?

Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric

"When I'm not with you I feel as if I'm not whole. When I sit, I want to walk; when I walk, I'm looking forward to going home; when I'm amusing myself, I want to study; when I study, I can't sit still and concentrate; and when I go to sleep, I'm not satisfied with how I spent the day."

Reading through the love letters from Einstein to his wife, you're struck not just by their warmth and affection, but also their mutual intellectual respect. We have to admit though- we're a little bit envious of Mileva. When is a Nobel-prize winning, paradigm shifting physicist going to write us love letters like this?

Marie and Pierre Curie

It's one thing to be loved by a Nobel-prize winning scientist- it's another to actually work side by side with your partner to do research that will win you both the Nobel prize. Also, we can't help but love Marie's totally non-bridezilla approach to choosing her wedding dress, "I have no dress except the one I wear every day. If you are going to be kind enough to give me one, please let it be practical and dark so that I can put it on afterwards to go to the laboratory."

Mulder and Scully

This maybe a little controversial- but we're glad they finally got together. Even if it did take them 7 seasons and the relationship didn't last through to the reboot. From getting (nearly) naked in the pilot, through the post-Alien cancer-scare forehead kiss, to the almost snog with the not-actually-Mulder-but-a-shapeshifter, we were totally rooting for the Sculderlove to blossom. We just can't believe that we had to wait two seasons from when he declared that she was his one in 5 billion to finally getting it on.

Hans Solo and Princess Leia

Yeah…maybe a little bit of a nerd cliché, but they do make a great couple- mainly due to the snarky bickering. "stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!" has to be one of our favourite put-downs, and the 'I love you/I know' line is the nerd's equivalent of 'kiss me, kiss me as if it's the last time. As with Mulder and Scully, it's a relationship that hasn't lasted the long-haul, but we're still hopeful for a reconciliation.

You too can find true nerd love - join us on May 4th, when Nerd Nite London & Science Showoff do speed dating at the Hackney Picture House, with a talk from scientist and TV expert Dr Emily Grossman on 'X -Rated Weird and Wonderful Science Facts' to help get the conversation flowing.
