Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are set to visit Saipan to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.The visit will take place on 27 and 28 June when the royal couple will attend services to remember the casualties of fighting during World War II.Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced the plans yesterday (27.04.05). He said: "Their majesties have long expressed the intent to mourn for those who died in the previous war, not to forget the sorrow of the bereaved families and to continue to wish for world peace."The couple may also visit the US war memorial and Banzai cliff where Japanese soldiers and civilians committed suicide in order to avoid capture.They will be the first Japanese royals to visit the US territory, the site of some of the bloodiest battles between American and Japanese forces, since the war more than 60 years ago.Thirty thousand Japanese soldiers, three thousand US troops and nine hundred locals were killed in fighting.
