Karl Lagerfeld's sketch for WWD

Top designers are vying to create gifts for Britain's royal baby.

The likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Lacroix and Vera Wang were asked by WWD to sketch stylish present ideas for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's newborn son.

French fashion house Dior was so inspired by the task, it imagined an entire line called Baby Dior's Petit Bonheur revolving around the tiny tot, who will be third in line to the throne.

They said: "Like fairies leaning over a cradle, Baby Dior was inspired by Mr. Dior's lucky charms to adorn the future newborn's outfits.

"Cashmere knitting, coming in a beautiful leather suitcase, was twisted with four-leaf clovers to keep the baby warm. Each piece, embellished with embroideries and lace, was delicately handmade, requiring hours of work."

Lacroix's entry depicted a grand buggy to transport the two-day old baby around, featuring a royal carriage and a Union Jack flag.

Meanwhile, Karl showed off his sense of humour by sketching a royal dummy fit for a future king, with a crown instead of a rubber teat.

Accessories queen Anya Hindmarch drew a keepsake box engraved with 'Welcome to the world!' which boasted compartments for the royal couple to keep mementos of their son's first milestones.

Big fashion stars are expected to flock to dress the baby boy - who is yet to be named - as he gets older, even though his mother famously refuses to accept free gifts from designers and insists on paying for her clothes.
