The couple confirmed last week they will tie the knot in May 2018 after the flame-haired prince popped the question, and the pair are both such fans of the fruit they want it to play a huge part in their big day.

A source told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "This will be the first royal wedding cake made from bananas."

Harry is known to have a penchant for bananas after his former royal chef Darren McGrady admitted he and his brother Prince William "loved banana flan, anything with banana really, banana ice cream".

What's more, the yellow fruit has already played a part in his and Meghan's relationship.

In November 2016, she posted an Instagram picture of two bananas spooning and added the caption: "Sleep tight xx (sic)". Some fans believe it was a cryptic message to Harry.

A banana cake would mark a royal wedding first, and cake designer Rosalind Miller is expecting the couple to break with tradition.

She said: "A traditional wedding cake is a rich fruit cake, like a Christmas cake, where all the cake is soaked in alcohol first.

"But with Meghan being American, they are more used to having sponge cakes. We find that in actual fact, most couples that come to us also want sponge cakes these days. The traditional rich fruit cake is not very popular now."

Harry and Meghan stepped out together in Nottingham on Friday (01.12.17) in their first public royal engagement since confirming they will marry next year.

They were spotted holding hands in the city, where they were for a World Aids Day fair and to visit a youth project.
