The elevated vehicle - which was debuted at the China Beijing International High-Tech Expo - can carry up to 1,200 people at once and can pass above normal road vehicles, the Daily Mirror newspaper reports.

Bai Zhiming, the engineer in charge of the project, said: ''With a carrying capacity of 1,200 people at a time, the TEB has the same functions as the subway while its cost of construction is less than one fifth of the subway. Its construction can be finished in one year.''

Trials for the Transit Elevated Bus are expected to take place later this year in Qinhuangdao City.
