Spotify experiments with new video feature

The music streaming service is playing around with a new video feed feature that is similar to the style of short-form videos seen on TikTok.

Journalist Chris Messina discovered the update on the beta version of the iOS app, as he posted screenshots on Twitter of a new icon on Spotify’s navigation bar labelled “Discover”.

When clicked, the Discover tab shows the user fullscreen video clips as songs are played, which users can leave a like on.

Spotify confirmed the test in a statement provided to TechCrunch, but would not confirm if the feature was here to stay.

A spokesperson said: “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.”

The news comes after Spotify also recently launched a new lyrics feature that allows users on both the paid and free versions of its site to look up the lyrics to their favourite songs without leaving the app.

The lyrics themselves are provided by Musixmatch, which claims to offer lyrics for “over 8 million” titles, and will be accessible on every platform where Spotify has an app – including iOS, Android, desktop computers, gaming consoles, and smart TVs.
