Linthwaite House Hotel Bowness-on-Windermere. You know when you plan a trip or visit and having carried out your research you get the feeling the place is going to be something special – well we had that thought when heading to Linthwaite House hotel at Bowness on the edge of Windermere.

Linthwaite House Hotel

Linthwaite House Hotel

Linthwaite House – an Edwardian Country House with a modern contemporary twist due to its stunning artworks and tasteful décor which oozes class style and sophistication.

All this is then set in 14 acres of beautifully tended private woodland grounds, (again interspaced with several stunning bronze and stone artworks) giving visitors breath taking views over the Lake District countryside from the hilltop location.

Linthwaite House underwent twelve months of refurbishment, completed in 2018, bringing this 36 room Country House Hotel in line with the rest of the Leeu Collection portfolio.

The location makes it the perfect base from which to explore the scenic surroundings with plenty for guests to do within the beautiful grounds. Try a game of boules or a game of chess on the giant outdoor chessboard although your moves will be studied by three discerning giant bronze monkeys.

You could also take a wander among walking trails while admiring the local plants, flora and tucked away amongst the trees you will come across sculptures of a tiger or a Fairy with a group of baby deer and lets not miss out the cricket playing rabbits as the artworks spill into the outdoors.

Head further afield take a bike ride and explore the ‘chocolate-box’ village of Bowness-on-Windermere. There are two row boats available on the Hotels own tarn and for keen angler, there is also fly fishing available. After a day of exploring The Lakes, why not treat yourself and book an in-room massage to ease those tired muscles.

We were staying in one of the Junior suites, these spacious suites are the height of luxury with an en-suite bathroom with a luxurious bath and walk in shower, all the complimentary toiletries are Molton Brown for that extra feel of being spoilt.

The suites are set among a secluded wooded area in the Hotel grounds not far from the Lake Suites, guests are taken up to these along a gravel path in a golf buggy, and when you are ready to come back to dine reception will send a buggy back up for you.

Talking about dining, the restaurant – Stella, is beautifully laid out, with its green cocktail chairs, blue leather sofas set off by a centre piece of white spring flowers in a silver period bowl, the walls are decorated by a mixture of paintings by local and international artists and the décor is given a contemporary look with geometric wallpaper.

Of additional note in keeping with the present gourmet approach of the chef serving a ‘de-constructed’ sweet one wall as you enter has a piece of art hung on it that is a de-constructed 1950’s singer sewing machine.

The chef in charge, Gianluca Interranti is one of Italy’s finest and with her she brings a menu that has a Mediterranean slant, but all the dishes are made from local produce, grown or reared in the Lake District, sort of Milan meets Carlisle, but the thing is it really works.

I would highly recommend the pan-fried local scallops, and the Lamb cutlets, with Sicilian panella potatoes, then again that’s only me and all the other dishes looked amazing.

If you want to eat in other than at dinner the Bar and Conservatory serve an all-day menu of small plates and Florentine Pizza.

It must be noted the staff were attentive and served the food at its best, looking after us wonderfully.

Breakfast is as you would expect with a range of hot and cold choices all beautifully presented.

Linthwaite House with its quirky artworks stunning location rich gardens, great views and many interesting works of art and bronzes, rooms that are the peak of luxury and style, with staff under the guiding eye of General Manager Karen Irving that make it their mission to ensure your stay is perfection and all you anticipated it would be.

As I said at the beginning – ‘you got the feeling the place is going to be something special’ well all I can say it was special and I would highly recommend that you put it on your list of must visit places.
