Jump on board the HipGeo train

App: HipGeo

Price: Free

Available on: iPhone, iPad and Android

What is it:

HipGeo is a cross between a social network and a travel journal. It is an app that allows people to easily record and share what they do on their travels, excursions, and holidays using their smart phone. HipGeo automatically transforms all the photos and text you take on your iPhone, iPad and Android, whether you're on holiday in Spain or just hanging around in your hometown, using the GPS in your phone and transforming into a Facebook timeline-type live stream.

Social media benefits:

You can watch your adventures instantly unfold on maps and HipGeo automatically creates virtual journals which can be instantly shared via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and by links in emails and blogs. Furthermore, the social side to the app allows users to see nearby, popular photo journals in a real-time feed.

If you come across a HipGeo user whose stream you particularly enjoy then you have the option to follow them on Twitter, placing that user into a separate area of your profile where you can keep up with their travels through photos.

We love:

The app is one of the most convenient ways for people to keep track of what they saw, where they saw it, share it, and use what other people share to enhance their own experiences. You can see what your friends and family are doing while out and about, access information from other HipGeo users to help plan a trip or follow your favourite travellers who have a HipGeo account.

The location-aware app also has a vivid and attractive interface on which users can also manually post their own streams by submitting their location, a text blurb, or a photo, which will take place on the app's mapmation function. You can choose any of the options, it is easy enough, and you can either take a new photo or choose an existing one from your camera roll.

Downfall:

HipGeo is a fairly up and coming app and at this point only those with a dedicated passion for travel will be using it resulting in low nearby activity. However, like instagram and keek, the app has huge potential, especially in the field of citizen journalism and once the app begins to draw attention we’re sure it will explode with movement, producing an interesting and addictive timeline.

Verdict:

If you’re a traveller, a culture-seeker, a city-hopper or a foodie, this app will appeal to your curious nature. For everyone else, HipGeo is a great way to take your first step into the world of what is essentially a virtual travel diary with real-time updates of some great travel photos and information from across the world. For that reason we give HipGeo our first travel-tastic 5/5.
