Hotels.com has reported an increase in searches to Copenhagen ahead of the start of Series Three of ‘The Killing’, which aired on BBC Four on Saturday 17 November.

Already capitalising on the nation’s fashion buying habits, causing the sales of woolly jumpers to soar, the “Lund effect” is now extending into the UK travel market with searches to Copenhagen up 149% as British travellers look to follow in the footsteps of Sarah Lund by visiting the Danish capital and location of this acclaimed crime thriller.

Visitors to the capital can even embark on their own ‘The Killing’ tour in Copenhagen taking in the key locations visited by Lund as she ruthlessly uncovers the latest crimes.

The first two episodes of Series Three shown on Saturday showcased some of Copenhagen’s top sights in their usual dramatic form. The docks made an appearance, as the tattooed body of a sailor was washed up, Copenhagen’s City Hall provided the setting of the usual political turmoil intrinsically linked in to the homicide, and miles of beautiful yet eerie Danish woodland acted as the backdrop to a very high profile kidnapping.

Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com said: “Sarah Lund’s emergence as the latest British travel inspiration showcases the huge following that the Danish crime series has here in the UK. The hotly anticipated third series has caused UK travellers to head to the site of the drama – no doubt donning their latest knitwear in celebration of this fantastic TV series!”

* Percentage increase based on searches on 1 November – 18 November 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.
