Menorca, Spain

Destinations in Spain and the Spanish isles have experienced the biggest increases in searches in 2012 compared to 2011 in eight of 16 European countries, according to the Hotels.com annual Hotlist.

The Hotlist reveals the destinations which have experienced the greatest increase in searches over the past year within each nation, showing the changing travel preferences of the various countries included.

Among those nations showing such a dramatic increase in searches were Italy, Norway and Sweden.

However, the greatest increase in searches was revealed to have come from Spain itself (searches to Alayor, Menorca up 500 per cent), with the Spanish nation showing a strong inclination to stay within the borders of their islands and travel their own country.

However, it would seem the UK bucked this travel trend - the destination with the greatest increase in searches among UK travellers was Monastir in Tunisia (up 490 per cent).

Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com said: “In light of the continued economic climate in Spain and other Eurozone countries in 2012, it is pleasing to see such positive news for Spanish tourism. Savvy travellers from across Europe have obviously taken advantage of the great deals to be found in Spanish tourist destinations.

“However, although we have seen similar interest in Spanish destinations at various points throughout the past year, the UK has shown an interesting immunity to this trend when looking at 2012 as a whole.”
