Over the weekend, Brits will be getting behind the wheel just to take in the scenery of some of the UK’s most beautiful spots. The study revealed that over half say they find driving enjoyable and under a third say the drive helps them to wind down. As well as soaking up the wonderful scenery, the study revealed that a quarter drive for leisure because it’s a cheap day out with the family.

Not only do we love to take the car out for a spin, but MoneySupermarket carried out a list of ‘Must-Do’ drives and found that the Lake District reached the top road trip destinations in the UK. The Yorkshire Moors followed behind with 18 per cent of road trippers claiming this was their favourite destination to drive too. Other hot spots to travel too were beauty spots such as Snowdonia National Park in Wales, the Scottish Highlands and The Peak District are amongst other popular areas people like to visit in the UK.

The research also uncovered the top international spots for the more adventurous motorist. Route 66 claimed the top spot to travel too, the Pacific Coast Highway in California and the stunning Florida Keys all entered the top five list. As well as Amalfi Coast, Italy, claiming second place and great Ocean Road, Australia, coming in at fourth place for the desired place to visit.

MoneySupermarket’s ‘Road Trip’ research also uncovered the roads UK motorists consider to be the worst. It found that 39 per cent of motorists would prefer not to travel along the 117-mile M25 ‘London Orbital,’ while a quarter of motorists named the busy M6, along with the Birmingham stretch, as the road that they would most like to avoid.

Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket.com said: “Road trips are a fantastic way to see different parts of the UK and further afield. Whether you like the chance to head off into the countryside of use it as an activity to do with the family, the bank holiday is a perfect time to hit the road and escape the usual daily commute.”

Harrison states that drivers should be prepared before hitting the road and ensure that they have breakdown cover to avoid any unexpected damages. “Drivers must also remember to be fully prepared before hitting the road. Ensure you have breakdown cover in place, otherwise it could end up costing you a packet for a one-off recovery if you aren’t covered.”

He added: “If you are looking to drive outside of the UK, many breakdown policies also give you the option to cover yourself whilst driving in the EU. If your policy is about to end, it is well worth shopping around the cover. Motorists can save an average £405 by shopping around for their insurance premiums through Money Supermarket.com.”
