Following Ashley Cole getting a told of by an American bar women in Missouri, Hotels.com thought they would find out if being clueless about tips extends to the rest of Brits.

87% of Brits said that they have no idea how much to tip when they are abroad. 28% shockingly never leave a tip of their service on holiday!  

36% said that is it baffling trying to work out who much you owe for food given the changing cultures and local etiquette. Unless they have done their research Brits are left confused. 4% said that they don’t tip for fear of leaving the wrong amount whereas 10% will tip more for fear of offending the locals.  

Of those who will leave a tip, 93% said that they would do this in Japan; however this is actually deemed rude and is not commonplace for the locals.  

 Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com said, "Like Ashley, it seems Brits are not the best when it comes to tipping etiquette! Tipping can be certainly be very confusing, so we would recommend doing some simple research around your destination beforehand to avoid any 'own goals'…"
