The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still has stormed to the top of the UK box office toppling Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa after just one week.

The film, which stars Keanu Reeves and Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly, topped the chart grossing £2.7 million in the film's opening weekend.

And despite poor reviews the film has dominated the box office both sides of the Atlantic and was a remake of the 1951 cult classic.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa had to settle for second place grossing a further £2.4 million. Four Christmases fell to three.

Inkheart was another new entry at number four. The film brings together an impressive cast of Brendan Frasier, Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren and Andy Serkis in the adaptation of the Cornelia Funke novel. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was the only other new entry that rounded off the top five.

The Transporter fell three place from four to six while Changeling also fell three places from four to seven.
