There's just over a month until the start of Game of Thrones season 6, and the moment fans have been waiting for has finally arrived, as HBO yesterday (March 8) dropped an official trailer for the season with some big glimpses at the drama headed to the small screen.

The trailer opens with Jon Snow lying, presumably dead in the snow where we left him at the end of season 5. A voice says, "He's gone," and when we see him later dead on a slab in the visuals, it's obvious that the Jon we all once knew has 'left the building'. Whether he comes back (mysterious hands were being lain on his body) as part of a resurrection or ritual similar to that remains to be seen, but it's looking very likely.

We see a Martell ship sailing to King's Landing before Jaime Lannister tells lover and sister Cersei Lannister: "We're the only ones that matter, and everything they've taken from us we're going to take back and more." Pair this with all of the battles and fighting we're teased towards the end of this trailer and it's looking like the war for power is going to step up a notch.

A little bit of Ramsay and Roose Bolton is shown, who currently hold the North after helping take down the Starks, but their storyline is being kept tightly underwraps for now.

What we do get to find out a little bit more about is Melisandre and where she's headed. She looks at one point to be using her body for gain once more, but we also see her tearfully confess: "The great victory I saw in the flames, all of it was a lie." Could she be losing faith in her God?

Daenerys when we catch up with her looks to be captured and a prisoner of the new Dothraki clan she's encountered, so it will be interesting to see her in this new position after she's remained so powerful for so long.

A man who seems to have done the opposite and shot to great power is The High Sparrow back at King's Landing, and he has some big plans, saying: "Every one of us is poor and powerless and yet, we can overthrow an empire."

The Lannister who turned to the religion is also seen warning Cersei: "Order your man to step aside or there will be violence." Like a BOSS, Cersei responds: "I choose violence," standing proudly with her new pet, The Mountain, by her side.

Again we only see little flashes of where some characters are. When we get a glimpse of Sansa Stark, Tyrion Lannister can be heard saying: "You're in the great game now, and the great game is terrifying." She could be making some majorly powerful moves this season.

Arya looks to remain blinded for the foreseeable future and could be in training to heighten her senses and continue being a fierce young warrior. Brienne of Tarth also continues to fight, but she is only seen briefly. Hopefully, book readers will get the storyline from her and Podrick they've all been waiting for since seasons four and five.

Despite locking her up and accusing her of crimes, Margaery could find a friend in The High Sparrow who stands above her and offers her a hand. Could they form an alliance to take down the Lannisters and gain control?

We also see the return of Bran Stark who's back, stood up on his legs and so perhaps in a vision, turning to find a White Walker staring right back at him.

The trailer ends with some funny words from Davos Seaworth, who says: "I've never been much of a fighter. Apologies for what you're about to see." Foreshadowing, much? Perhaps he's apologising on behalf of the writers for all of the madness and chaos that's going to be coming to viewers this season. Game of Thrones is known for not pulling its punches and multiple deaths of beloved characters would at this point not come as a surprise.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO in the US on April 24 and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK at 2am on April 25.
