Fans will soon find out what 24 is like without Jack Bauer, with FOX now in the midst of developing a new spin-off series with a brand new lead.

Speaking to TV Line, executive producer Howard Gordon told of how a "new twentysomething male terrorist hunter" will be the driving force behind the new series. Despite that, Bauer will still feature as a guest star, weaving in and out of the show.

The new lead is to be teamed alongside a more seasoned, older female agent, and viewers will get their first glimpse of the pair in action when the spinoff launches in 2016 as a miniseries with potential to go on and become a long-term show if numbers are good.

Meanwhile, Howard Gordon of Franchise confirmed at the Critics Choice Television Awards this past Sunday that the new protagonist's female agent will not be Yvonne Strahovski's Kate Morgan, but she may also pop up from time to time in a guest role.

After nine seasons in the driver's seat, this could be the perfect time for Jack to pass the torch on - but will the show be able to survive without the leading man who has seen it gain so much success in the past?
