Kate Thornton almost crashed her car when she received a surprise phone call from George Michael.

It happened in 2009 after Kate had hosted an episode of 'This Morning' with Peter Andre and she got a call from a number she didn't recognise who introduced himself as "the Singing Greek", prompting her to believe it was Pete on the other end of the line. The 'Mysterious Girl' singer was, like George, born in London and is of Greek-Cypriot descent.

However, once she realised it was in fact her idol, she could barely maintain her composure, particularly after realising he also happened to be in the bath at the time.

Speaking on ‘Podcasts From Midlife’, the former ‘X Factor’ host said: “This guy goes, ‘Hey it’s the Singing Greek.'"

After realising it was the former Wham! man, Kate “was driving round and round the Imax roundabout at Waterloo just in a tiz".

George - who died on Christmas Day 2016 at the age of 53 - also phoned Kate on an occasion when she was hosting ITV panel show ‘Loose Women’, prompting Kate to profess her love for him and suggesting they get married.

Kate, 48, said: “I was hosting ‘Loose Women’ and he (George Michael) called in one day. I told him I loved him and I thought we should get married.”
