The blockbuster Amazon Prime Original series is based on the award-winning novel by Neil Gaiman, who is delighted 'Dexter' screenwriter and producer Charles 'Chic' Eglee will be on board as the new showrunner.

Neil - who has also penned books such as 'Stardust' and 'Coraline' - said: "I'm thrilled 'American Gods' has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I'm getting to work on it with Chic Eglee.

"Chic is the best partner-in-crime. We've been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I'm delighted that he gets to carry the 'American Gods' torch on to glory."

The 'Sandman' writer also thanked the cast, crew and fans for being devoted to the series and says the universal "love" of the fantasy drama - which stars Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning and Crispin Glover - has ensured its comeback.

He said: "Thank you to Fremantle, Starz and Amazon for having faith in the series, to Bryan, Michael and Jesse for bringing it this far, to all the cast and crew, and most of all to the viewers.

"It's their love of the characters that took us to this point, and will take us on to the next chapter."

Brad Beale - vice-president of worldwide licensing for Prime Video - said: "'American Gods' is stunning entertainment and our customers across the globe are loving it.

"With season two just kicking off, we're thrilled that we can officially announce for our customers and fans of Neil Gaiman that another season of the series they love will be coming to Prime Video."
