The long running reality TV series - which is currently hosted by Emma Willis - is currently airing its final civilian season on Channel 5, and although the future of the show and its celebrity version hang in the balance, it has been claimed it could move to online platform Netflix.

Endemol, who own the format of the programme, are said to be sitting down with the streaming service for discussions next week, and sources say it could act as the "saviour" of the show.

A TV source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre TV column: "Netflix could be the saviours of Big Brother - the news fans have wanted to hear since Channel 5 made the announcement.

"Executives at Endemol are meeting with Netflix early next week.

"Of course it's still early days.

"Streaming sites have a lot of money so it's an option they're looking at."

The news comes after show host Emma recently admitted she was "sad and disappointed" that Channel 5 had decided to drop the programme.

She said: "I feel sad and disappointed because it's been a massive part of my life as a human being before I worked on it and also as a career and as a member of the British public, as it's been on TV for almost 20 years.

"I am sad about it but everything needs a break at some point or a rest or a new home to breathe life into it again.

"So hopefully it will come back in some way shape or form at some point but if it does come back it needs to be in the right way and not rushed."

Back in September, Channel 5 confirmed it would not be renewing its contract with Endemol to continue airing the show, which was originally broadcast on Channel 4 before moving networks in 2011.

A spokesperson said: "The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last - of either celebrity or civilian versions - on Channel 5.

"We'd like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success.

"Most importantly, we'd like to thank fans of the show for their support over the last seven years. We look forward to giving the final series a brilliant send-off."
