The 57-year-old star believes the sci-fi series' producers should bring in some female cyborgs after a Cyberwoman appeared in the spin-off show 'Torchwood' in 2006.

He told Doctor Who magazine: "It’s high time we had a Cyberwoman – I think we really need to address that.

"The Doctor with a Cyberwoman – that dynamic, feminine element of himself ... his flirtatious nature ... would be great with a Cyberwoman."

Christopher starred as the Ninth Doctor in 2005 but is pleased to see Jodie Whittaker - who took over the Time Lord role in 2017 - as the first-ever female lead star in the long-running series.

However, he would like to see the show looked at more from a "female lens".

He explained: "It’s great that we have a female Doctor ... we should take that further in the way we look at history. Look at it through a female lens."

It comes as Christopher previously struggled to see himself being on the TV show, and thought it was important to keep his own Salford accent while playing the Doctor.

He said: "One of the reasons why I didn’t like the show when I was a kid was I couldn’t put myself in that role. I know Tom Baker is a Scouser, but he certainly didn’t sound like one to me.

"The series seemed to be saying that if you’re white and you’re middle class, you have ownership of intellect and science."

Christopher recently returned to his iconic role for a new audio drama and has been having a great time recording his parts.

Executive producer Nick Briggs said: "He’s really joyous about it. He said within two minutes of doing it, he was back in the zone, back there with the character.

"And he was very flattering to me – I’d written the script. He said, 'You’ve really captured the character as I played him and it’s the way he spoke.'

"It’s been really lovely, actually. He’s made us laugh a lot. And he’s been singing quite a bit as well. He’s a real music enthusiast."
