'Coronation Street' fans have sparked speculation Angela Griffin could return to the soap as the mother of Alexandra Mardell's character Emma Brooker.

The soap's supporters have taken to Twitter to point out the resemblance between the hair stylist (Alexandra) and Angela's alter-ego Fiona Middleton, who was also a hairdresser and enjoyed a romance with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) during her time in Weatherfield.

One Twitter user wrote: "So how long before we find out that you're Steve McDonald's daughter from his brief relationship with the hairdresser? Fiona I think she was called? Great way to get Angela Griffin back. :-) (sic)"

Another shared: "I know I said she could be Kelly Crabtree's daughter, isn't Emma the right age to be Fiona & Steve's daughter? #AngelaGriffin @simongregson123 #CoronationStreet (sic)"

One viewer wrote: "#corrie is it me? Or does Emma look like a young Fiona? Xx (sic)"

As well as dating Steve, Fiona had an affair with his dad, Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson), who will be returning to the cobbles later this year, and she dated Tony Horrocks (Lee Warburton).

Fiona - who had a son, Morgan, with her ex Alan McKenna, who jilted her at the alter - departed Weatherfield in 1998 after Steve cheated on her with her best friend Maxine Heavey (Tracy Shaw), but Angela has previously admitted her alter-ego could've been pregnant before she left.

In 2014, she said: "My idea for a return storyline - if I were to go back - was that I'd have been pregnant by Steve when I left. And I could then return with the child."

What's more, earlier this year, Angela - who starred on 'Corrie' for six years after joining in 1992 - admitted she would consider returning to the soap if she was involved in a "cracking storyline".

She said: "If he's [Sean Wilson] going back you never know who else goes back...

"You never know. Never say never...

"It's got to be a cracking storyline and it's got to have Steve McDonald in it.

"Who knows if I will get in another black cab and come back."

Earlier this month, Alexandra confirmed she has signed a new contract to remain on the soap for the foreseeable future.
