The 58-year-old actor - who is best-known for his starring role in 'Red Dwarf' - and Amy, 27, wowed the judges with their eye-catching Jive to the sounds of 'Flip, Flop and Fly' by Ellis Hall.

Danny achieved four scores of nine from the judges and one perfect ten to top the leaderboard at the end of the night.

The actor received a standing ovation from the audience and judge Darcey Bussell felt his performance was worthy of the highest possible score.

She said: "I have to get up and applaud you that was extraordinary. The precision of your feet. The stretch of your foot on those kicks and flicks..."

Shirley Ballas observed that Danny was on his "way up", while Alfonso Ribeiro - who was standing in for Bruno Tonioli - enthused: "You came out. You had fun. That was flying right now."

Craig Revel Horwood was similarly impressed by the routine.

He said: "That is a dance I think for the final."

Danny was closely followed at the top of the standings by pop star Ashley Roberts and her professional partner Pasha Kovalev, who achieved an impressive score of 36 points.

Elsewhere, Vick Hope is languishing at the bottom of the leaderboard after failing to impress the judges and scoring a meagre 20 points for her Cha Cha.
