The 45-year-old comedian was thrilled that his mother Kathleen was such a hit with viewers when she filmed some segments for the ITV talent show but quipped he was disappointed when Simon took back his place.

He said: "She got to step in and was very, very popular on the show. And loads of people were saying let's make her a permanent fixture and get rid of Simon and have my mum on the panel.

"Simon read all that and he made sure he was on time this year, so my mum didn't get to do it. I was really annoyed because my mum was great with it, she was actually first to buzz people off."

And David says Simon has been "in a better mood" this year but joked his boss finds it difficult to get to the studios at the right time.

He added: "This year he's been in a better mood. You've never seen him on this show [Lorraine] because he doesn't get up until 4.00pm in the afternoon. It's hard to make a show when you're meant to start filming at 1.00pm."

And David has promised there will be a huge variety of talent on the show and says he is looking for entertainers rather than those who are just talented.

Speaking on Lorraine, he shared: "There's slightly naughty things but it's basically family viewing. I like that it's fun, you can get up and do anything.

"Pretty much everyone out there has a party piece. It doesn't really matter if you're not the most talented person, it's about entertaining. Sometimes I think talented people are boring."
