An all-star cast will bring David Walliams' children's novel 'Gangsta Granny' to life in a Christmas special for BBC One.

Julia McKenzie, Joanna Lumley, Rob Brydon and Miranda Hart have been confirmed to star alongside the 'Britain's Got Talent Judge' in the 60-minute comedy drama, which tells the story of schoolboy Ben who embarks on a wild adventure to complete a heist after discovering his grandma is secretly an international jewel thief.

David Walliams expressed his joy at landing the comedians to help bring his book to TV screens.

He said: "I am thrilled that we have such a stellar cast of comedy legends for 'Gangsta Granny'. I can only apologise that I am in it too!"

The colourful cast sees Julia take on the role of Ben's grandmother, David and Miranda will star as his "obsessed" parents while 'Absolutely Fabulous' star Joanna stars as the Queen.

Mark Freeland, BBC UK Controller of Comedy Production, said: "David asked us not to muck up his massively popular book on TV. So we cast him and then added some of the most-loved and wonderful comedy actors in the country. I hope it will be a very special."

'Gangsta Granny' begins filming on Sunday (27.10.13), for broadcast this Christmas on BBC One.
