The BBC has announced that a sneak-peek of the much-anticipated new sci-fi series will be broadcast during the all-important soccer match between France and Croatia, with the teaser giving fans an exclusive look at the Time Lord, played by Jodie Whittaker, in action.

The broadcaster said, in reference to England's elimination from the tournament: "The World Cup may not be coming home but the Tardis is on its way."

A teaser video released by the BBC shows the new 'Doctor Who' logo in front of a shattered red background, before the phrase "The universe is calling" appears on screen.

The new series of the show is to screened in the autumn.

Meanwhile, Jodie previously admitted it is "completely overwhelming" to be the first female Time Lord.

The 36-year-old actress claimed her casting proves that anything is possible, and that people shouldn't ever feel "boxed in" by their own gender.

She said: "It feels completely overwhelming; as an actor, as a woman, as a feminist, as a human, as someone who wants to continually challenge themselves and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be.

"I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender because this is a really exciting time and 'Doctor Who' represents everything that's exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one."
