In one we see DSI Stella Gibson, played by Gillian Anderson on the phone, looking a little worried about whatever the person on the line is telling her.

The second sees serial killer Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan in a tunnel, still alive despite being shot in the dramatic cliffhanger ending we saw in series 2.

Speaking to the Press Association, Anderson said of her character Stella: "I feel like she's quite unique and I still find her mysterious. I still am intrigued by her and want to see what her journey is. So that interests me."

She added: "There are bits and pieces, little things that are said [in the third series] that reveal a little bit about where she's come from and what her life experience is... What brought her to be where she is today."

Newcomers to the series include Swedish actor Krister Henriksson, Mr Selfridge's Aidan McArdle, Humans star Ruth Bradley, Trollied's Aisling Bea and Richard Coyle of Coupling fame.

Colin Morgan will also return as DS Tom Anderson, despite also being shot at the end of the second series.

John Lynch returns as Jim Burns, with Valene Kane as Rose Stagg, Emmett J Scanlan as DS Glenn Martin and Stuart Graham as DCI Matt Eastwood all back on board.

Spector's wife Sally Ann (Bronagh Waugh) and obsessed schoolgirl Katie Benedetto (Aisling Franciosi) are also back.

Archie Panjabi who played potential Stella Gibson love interest Reed Smith however will not be returning, with the actor telling Digital Spy "the schedules didn't work out".
