The 59-year-old presenter has already filmed the show's pilot episode and is poised to put pen-to-paper on a lucrative deal that will see him host the new ITV programme, which has been handed a working title of 'Going For A Fortune'.

A source close to the former soccer star told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Gary had meetings with ITV execs over the autumn after he was approached with this new show.

"He's a tried and tested presenter, and after internal research from the broadcaster which put Gary at the top of viewers' 'most liked' polls, he was deemed to be the man for the job."

Gary currently hosts 'Match of the Day' on the BBC, having made a successful transition into the TV industry following his sports career.

And the opportunity to host the new ITV show - which isn't related to sports - has apparently arrived at the perfect time for the presenter.

The source continued: "The timing was perfect as Gary had already volunteered to take a pay cut at the Beeb, so not only will he make this money up - he'll do it with interest.

"It's an exciting new quiz show concept, non-sport related, and will see members of the public able to win vast sums of money. Everyone at the channel has high hopes."
