Following the release of The Nan Movie, Catherine Tate is making another return to the comedy scene, with a brand new original TV series called Hard Cell, hitting Netflix in April 2022.

Here, she will play multiple characters in a mockumentary set in fictional female prison, HMP Woldsley.

Amongst them is the Governor Laura Willis, who feels she can change the way the public view inmates through creativity, which she hopes will lead to more successful rates of rehabilitation.

There's also the psychopath lifer, Big Viv, who may be a little harder to get through to than your average prisoner...

Set over a six week period, the inmates are tasked with rehearsing a musical directed by former Eastenders star Cheryl Fergison. Though she's not entirely convinced that everything will get off without a hitch, she cracks on with trying to help out.

With an oddball collection of women drawn together by the musical, they each find their voices in unusual yet effective ways, growing in confidence and, strengthening friendships.

Hard Cell promises to be a funny, yet surprisingly moving comedy series, that leans into the reality of life behind bars for female inmates across the country.

Alongside Tate and Fergison, the show also stars Christian Brassington, Niky Wardley, Lorna Brown, Caroline Harding, Jola Olajide and Duncan Wisbey.

Tate serves as writer and creator on the show, working with a creative team that also includes Niky Wardley and Alex Carter. Kristian Smith serves as executive producer.

I've always been a big fan of Catherine Tate. Her style of comedy is one that I grew up with, so to see her make a comeback of sorts with the recent The Nan Movie and now, a Netflix original series, is a joy.

Whether or not she has updated that comedy style enough to resonate with a modern-day audience on Netflix remains to be seen, but if anybody is up for the job, it's Tate.

The trailer for Hard Cell had me giggling, so I'm sure there's more than enough laughs to see us all through when the episodes drop next month.

Hard Cell - comprised of six 30-minute episodes - will launch exclusively on Netflix, on April 12th, 2022.
